Source of information:
Syed Zulfiqar Haider(Nantu) BA(Hons) MA.
Mir Mahmudul Haque(Mati) BA
My ancestors were not the original inhabitants of Garhfatepur. Syed Gaochia Daraj Al Bagdadi came from the Gulberg area of South Deccan before 13th generation. The next generation Syed Din Cheesti settled in Ghoraghat area of Rangpur / Dinajpur district. They came to this area with all their disciples to preach Islam. They were very religious family and after every 2/3 generation they used to immigrate to different areas. Their children were taught three different languages Urdu, Farsi and Bengali. The knowledge of these three local languages would certainly have helped in preaching the religion to the local population. In fact what I understood was that their family language was Urdu. Syed Najamuddin (10th generation) with all his family immigrated to Telihara, near Mohasthan, Bogra. But the next generation (12th), the four sons of Syed Zakiuddin (11th Generation)) with their two sisters moved to Garfatepur, Sonatola in the year 1914 AD. They bought the partially damaged RAJBARI of Nilambar Roy of KAMROOP(as history mentioned). They also bought plenty of lands in the western part of Bogra( Bishnoopur, Tilakpur and Shivshamudra). This used to be their Khamar Bari. The local people used to cultivate these lands and half the amount of rice and any other crops like jute or mustard etc grown in these lands were equally shared by the owner annually.

He was good friend of Munshi Dad Ali of Aushtogram, Kushtia, who wrote the two books “Vanga Pran” & “Asheke Rasool”.
“Ei Bange keno Agomono heno, Banga Vasa kari sudhu roptayono, e Vasa ki heno sudha sommeleyno, Kare Khujo Pakhi Bole Piu Kahan”.
I remember this few lines from this Vanga Pran book of Munshi Dad Ali. This was taught by my childhood teacher Ismail Chacha. Who taught us the Bengali and English alphabets and was our teacher until sixth class. Syed Zainal Abedin had many disciples on both sides of the Jamuna river in Mymensingh and Bogra like Ghoraghat, Fazilpur, Kabilpur etc. Ismail Chacha is a cousin of my father from maternal side. He taught a b c d to my father and uncle and also us. He used to live with my Dada always and did the tutoring and teaching job to his sons and grand sons. Last time I met him was in March 1981 when I took him to the Eye Specialist in Bogra for the Catarract surgery.

4. Syed Najir Ali (12th Gen) :
The youngest son of the family, mother’s name was Pioun Bibi. When he passed the then Entrance Examination, people from all around the area came to see him because education in those days amongst Muslim community was not very common. However he got into Police Services and became the Police Inspector of the then British Raj. He got married to Akhtarunnessa from Gunahar, sister of Md Motahar Hussain Khan, superintendent of Excise at that time. He was very successful Police Officer and received reward from the Palace of Kooch Bihar a Diamond Medal for his bravery in controlling crime. He was also doing business as a part time profession e.g buying and selling of rice of different quality from different places. All his brothers and sisters were financially supported by him. In fact all land property which he did and bought was equally divided between the four brothers. He also financed the education and life style of all his nephews and nieces who infact lived in his house. He was very open hearted person. The lawyer Kabejuddun of sutrapur Bogra was financed by him to continue the education (as mentioned by my Dadi). He was not relative to him by any way, The Diamond medal which he received as a reward was later on pinched by his in-laws. He could not save that in his safeguard. He was also rewarded a Golden Watch by the Brtish Raj for his succesfull mission in controlling crimes and maintaining the law and order. The watch is at this moment with one of his grand son Syed Akhtar Jamal. Though it was supposed to be with Dr Syed Akhtar Kamal who is his first grand son but during his absence the watch was given to his younger brother. There is no conflict on this issue between the brothers. He died in 1926 and his death was a mystery. He had a very dear servant whose name was Atul and Atul was not muslim but a Hindu. He was very loyal servant and Dada trusted him very much. The problem started with the possession of a Market place in Sonatola. While he was in a business trip to Talorah i.e. buying rice from Talorah market. He was staying in a house with Atul. This Atul opened the door in the early hours of the morning and allowed the miscreants to come in. They murdered him with an axe, We were told by different people in the locality that the two people who committed his cruel death were Nazir Mondol of Baigooni gram, north of Sonatola School and Rahamatullah Sarkar of Garhfatepur.
